Lead Day Camp Counselor

$22 hour minimum


Every day preschoolers participate in fun and engaging YMCA summer day camp programs. Our Mini Camps provide flexible camp hours between 12pm and 5:00pm. Lead Counselors are responsible for making sure all activities are prepared for each week and will communicate with both parents and branch staff. Lead Counselors will co-lead a group of 10-16 children in various activities throughout the Y Facility including group games, crafts, stem projects, cooking projects and more. Spend your summer full of fun with kids all summer long!

Day Camp season runs June 20 – August 26 (start dates vary by location) with trainings for some positions beginning in early May/June.

Minimum compensation for this role is $22.00/hour.

What you'll be doing

Support instructors in supervision of a group of 3 to 5 year olds to ensure their health, safety and to provide a positive experience for each camper.
Support team in implementation of program activities.
Plans weekly activities.
Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergency procedures.
Professionally engages with parents/guardians to provide pertinent program information and share about their camper’s experience.
Ensures that equipment is clean, safe, set up and stored properly.
Attends staff meetings and training programs as required.
Other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds.

What we're looking for in an applicant

18 years of age or older.
Leadership skills and ability to demonstrate, patience, caring and resolve with 3 - 5 year olds.
1 year of experience with camps, child care, tutoring, nannying, early learning, and/or coaching.
1 year + experience leading others as a lead or supervisor.
Demonstrated experience planning and implementing group activities.
Other applicable education, training, and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position will be considered.

Ability to model and demonstrate Y values; caring, respect, responsibility and honest.
Immunization records.
Current TB test by the Mantoux method. *
* Within 14 days of assuming camp duties.

Preferred Education/Experience
• Current state approved first aid certification.*
• Current state approved CPR certification.*
• Prefer knowledge of and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.). Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful.
• Experience with anti-racism practices and coalition building.
