OBJECTIVE SUMMARY: Perform administrative and clinical duties under the direction of a physician. Administrative duties may include scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing and coding for insurance purposes. Clinical duties may include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, and administering medications as directed by a physician.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Coordinates the daily activities of the employee health clinic to allow for routine physical examinations, treatment of acutely ill employees, epidemiological follow-ups, routine screenings for tuberculosis, hepatitis, rubella, and AIDS, employee education, and wellness related activities.
Work with employees who report symptoms of illness that require monitoring, contact tracing, reporting and release to work evaluations; maintains a tracking document of employee related illness that requires follow up.
Interview patients to obtain medical information and measure their vital signs, weight, and height
Show patients to examination rooms and prepare them for the physician
Record medical history, vital statistics and information such as test results in medical records
Collect blood, tissue or other laboratory specimens, log the specimens, and prepare them for testing
Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, and physician’s instructions to patients
Help physicians examine and treat patients, handing them instruments and materials or performing such tasks as giving injections and removing sutures
Authorize drug refills and provide prescription information to pharmacies
Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies

REQUIRED EDUCATION: High School Diploma, training in vocational school or college for a Medical Assistant

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: Need one or two years of on-the-job experience and informal training with experienced workers

REQUIRED LICENSE: Medical Assistant

SKILLS:

Knowledge of the English language including meaning and spelling of words, rules, of composition and grammar
Knowledge of the information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases and deformities

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Exposure to all patient infectious disease and body fluids


PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires being sensitive to others’ needs and feelings and being understanding and helpful on the job. Job requires being honest and ethical. Requires maintaining composure, keeping emotions in check, controlling anger, and avoiding aggressive behavior, even in very difficult situations.
